HIST4299 · History
Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences
What is capitalism? What are its virtues? Its failings? Does capitalism exacerbate or ameliorate poverty and inequality? These questions have obsessed countless intellectuals since the 18thcentury. Unsurprisingly, they did not all agree on the answers. The nature and desirability of capitalism has been subject to vigorous debate over the past several hundred years. This class concerns this intellectual history. We will read some of the most important works on the nature and workings of capitalism as an economic and social system, written by philosophers, economists, sociologists, and even novelists.
