Satisfies Foreign Language Proficiency Core Requirement<br>Conducted in French. This course will focus on the cultural moment when modern France was born: the age of Louis XIV and his palace at Versailles. We will study the grandeur and the conflict that define this summit of French history through a variety of documents, including a number of recent films that reconstruct the period, and contemporary masterpieces of painting, architecture and music. We will also read a variety of literary, historical, and eyewitness texts that portray the age as it was or wanted to be.
