Seminar & pre-1900. A seminar on the works of Charles Dickens. The sustained attention to a range of his novels willilluminate some of his specific contributions to the novel in English, as well as developmentsover the course of his career. We will consider character (the rendering of psychology and hischarismatic caricatures), narrative voice, plot structure, and setting, as well as the particularvision of social networks and sociality, with the pressures these exert on ethics and desire, and onpersonhood. We may read some short works and some important critical works, but our mainfocus will be on the novels.
