This course is class-restricted to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. What is 'enlightenment' and what implications does it have for politics? This course will examine several authors both ancient and modern with a focus on their visions of the process by which a human being comes to be enlightened, and how this process ultimately shapes their political activity.Readings to include selections from Plato, the Bible, Augustine, Descartes, Rousseau, Kant and Tocqueville.
