Fulfills US History requirement for History Majors. This course explores U.S. history via the development of popular culture. Students will study the creation and evolution of sports, music, television, and film industries to analyze how underground cultures such as hip hop and LGBT+ ballroom culture moved toward mainstream acceptance. Students will analyze a variety of sources including fashion, dance, cartoons, and radio. Course readings and assignments will also feature songs by musical artists such Kendrick Lamar and television shows such as RuPauls Drag Race. Students will gain an understanding of how race, gender, class, and sexuality shape the production and consumption of U.S. culture and vice versa.
