This course is designed to help students begin to mechanically analyze the physical objects in the world around them. Students will learn how to look at systems and determine how to model the forces and reactions for statically determinate systems. This course also covers vectors and the geometry of space, including three-dimensional coordinate systems, surfaces and solids, distance, spheres, vector operations such as the dot and cross products, and direction angles and cosines. The course explores the structures and properties of solids, examining how crystalline patterns shape materials like ice and salt, and how materials such as ceramics, semiconductors, and plastics are developed with specific properties in the field of materials science.
