ENGL1010 · English
Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences
Limited to 15 students. Designed as a workshop in which each student develops a portfolio of personal and academic writing, the seminar follows a semester-long process. Students write and rewrite essays continuously, discuss their works-in-progress in class, and receive feedback during individual and small group conferences with the instructor. Students read a wide range of texts, including various forms of non-fiction prose. In addition to regular conferences, the class meets two hours per week to discuss the writing process, the relationship between reading and writing, conventional and innovative ways of doing research, and evolving drafts of class members.

Do not take this class unless you’re interested in an English major. While I learned a lot in this class, specifically about how to appeal to other’s perspectives, it’s just too much. Peer reviews take 10 hours and he only gives you 5 days to do them. Nice guy but no.

Required three papers and a final portfolio. The workload is manageable compared to other FYW sections. She provides detailed feedback and is very helpful during office hours. The assigned readings are relevant and connect well to the course projects.

Amazing professor. Prof. Portillo really cares for ALL of his students and FYW was such an amazing class. Super easy A as well

Great Guy! Super Easy Class! Definitely take this class if you want an A!

In my opinion the best first year writing seminar teacher you can have. He is very chill, loves to talk about anything under the sun and gives easy grades. I am honestly going to miss some of the conversations we had about everything and nothing.

One of my favourite professors. He makes the class really interesting and funny. I would 100% recommend. Professor Saint-Widow is also really understanding and considerate if someone needs an extension or anything.

Super awkward but nice. Decent amount of work but easy A.

genuinely my favorite guy in the world. had him last semester and miss him everyday. actually the goat (but don't take advantage of it)!!

One of the best professors I've had. She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. My favorite part about her class was the ability to choose your topics for essays. Her class is based on pop culture so I wrote about social media and movies. She makes writing fun!

She’s literally the best professor for FYW. She’s very understanding of all her students, the kindest and most patient professor ever. The class is structured around essay assignments and reflections. Very chill about deadlines. She’s very “go with the flow”. Definitely recommend taking her.

It's a free A, but you won't learn anything from the class. Overall, painfully awkward, but an A is an A

BEST FYW Teacher: fun/engaging/interesting assignments. No quizzes or exams. HW is simple and not time consuming. Mostly graded on completion (unless it was an essay). If you are taking FYW, you have to get him. You don't have to be a great writer to get a good grade.

She has a very easy class compared to other sections. Tons of time to prepare and automatic 48-hour extensions. The readings aren't bad, she seems to genuinely care about her students. I thought the grading was very generous, just crucial to follow the instructions in her syllabus.

Grew on me a lot throughout the semester. Not gonna be the easiest FYW grader, but she's not unfair, and getting an A is pretty manageable. HW isn't bad at all and she's generous with extensions as long as you ask within a reasonable time.

An excellent professor for introducing students to college-level writing. Integrates her outgoing personality into discussions and is a generous grader that sets aside time to get to know every student's story through meaningful assignments and one-on-one meetings. Would definitely recommend.

Prof. Nguyen is the goat! Should definitely take him; 4 major essays/assignments and very simple readings and assignments that take less than an hour per week; Would recommend for FWS!

She is such a harsh grader, will take you down for very small formatting issues. Do not recommend this class.

She's a nice person, but she grades so harshly and has so much homework due every class. I would seriously NOT recommend. FYWS is supposed to be an easy A class and this professor made it her personal job to give you a bad grade.

Fun class. Too passive aggressive.

Alex is actually the goat. Work outside of class is minimal and only have 4 main assignments. In class, discussions were so interesting and random, and while I almost never agreed with his opinion, the debates were respectful and funny. Highly recommend taking his class to fulfill core

Great professor. The class isn’t difficult, and there’s a lot of relaxed, open discussion. We get plenty of time to complete assignments. He empathizes with the students' perspectives and understands his students very well.

This professor is amazing for any student, especially those who want to learn how to create meaningful conversations. If you take this course, I would recommend you to participate in class because your thoughts matter.

Not very approachable and obviously has favorites within her classes. Essays are a lot of work and she is a decently harsh graders with only a few students per class getting higher than a B+ on each essay. Decently light amount of homework except for essays.

She is very nice and very quirky. She will often laugh at herself but it makes the class fun. The workload can be decent at times. She is really understanding when it comes to deadlines and if you need to miss a class. She likes to give thoughtful feedback to everyone. Not a super easy A.

Super sweet and cares about her students. Very good at explaining and walking you through the writing process. Fair grader and reasonable workload

Highly recommend. She genuinely cares about her students. Workload is extremely manageable. Best prof you can have for FYWS. Take her if you have the chance!!!!
Nov 17, 2025 · Historical comment
As a decent writer, I do not think it is possible to get an A, let alone a B+ in his class without devoting your life to the art of writing.

Super nice professor. Only 2 grades; mid-semester portfolio and end of semester portfolio. Everything else is completion. Really lenient with pretty much everything; attendance, grading, late-work, etc. Really wants to support students and a fairly easy class.
